As Mister Alphabet husband-and-wife Co-Founders, we (Marshall and Haley Roemen), never planned to start a toy company. In 2014, having devoted our professional lives to other creative endeavors including fine art, design, and fashion, we decided to invest in a surprising concept that emerged out of Marshall's art studio one day. That year, Mister Alphabet was born.
Mister Alphabet™ is a figurine designed to bend into every letter of the alphabet. He was created to bring the alphabet to life through innovative interplay of figuration and letter formation, uniting adults with children and design with education. With aspirations for international growth, our love for bridge-building begins at a local level, and as such Mister Alphabet is proudly made in Los Angeles, California.
"This is an Heirloom"
In February of 2015, we debuted Mister Alphabet at Toy Fair 2015 in New York City, along with family member and partner, Michael Roemen. The product was received with overwhelming enthusiasm among retailers, educators, therapists, and designers. One of our favorite responses came from the director of a museum store in Chicago. After examining the doll, he said simply, "this is an heirloom", and asked when and how he could get Mister Alphabet in his store.
Mister Alphabet requires a number of challenging manufacturing processes, including rare-earth magnets, hand-painted details, permanent clothing, an overmolded wire armature, and a magnet-flap keepsake box. Our company finds value in a hands-on, collaborative, community approaches to making, and we hope to collaborate with other artists to create new characters from our format. Since February 2015, we've worked hard to secure the best manufacturing partners for Mister Alphabet™ here in the United States. We're proud of the dozens of engineers, textile professionals, and manufacturing partners who've helped us to bring every detail to fruition. We love the idea of a regional story.
Learning the ABCs is a fundamental task for the 2+ billion people who use the Roman alphabet including speakers of English, Spanish, and French. Many parents seek thoughtful ways to bridge effective learning with playtime in early childhood, including parents with special needs children. Within the $22 billion/year domestic toy industry ($88 billion globally), a growing number of consumers embrace toys which reflect thoughtful, lasting design sensibilities.
Mister Alphabet bridges the abstract nature of language with a representational figure, offering a timeless, hands-on tool for play and learning. Mister Alphabet is unique within the toy marketplace, sold as a single heirloom-quality figurine with flashcards and a magnet-flap keepsake box. Within the unique “bendable alphabet” format, other characters including Mrs. Alphabet can extend into future product lines. Potential branded products include books, games, educational curriculum, licensed goods, co-branded limited editions, and digital media.
